DJI Neo Mini Drone Review

The DJI Neo mini drone is designed as a fun, approachable flying camera that still manages to pack in genuinely clever tech. At around 135g with built in propeller guards, 4K video and smart shooting modes, it is clearly aimed at creators and casual fliers who want cinematic shots without lugging around a full size drone.

Design and build

The Neo is tiny in the hand and easy to slip into a small bag or even a large pocket. The fully shrouded props give it a “mini FPV” look and make it far less intimidating for first time pilots, as there is an extra layer of safety when flying indoors or around friends and family. At around 130 x 157 x 48 mm, it feels closer to a chunky action camera than a traditional drone.

DJI’s trademark build quality is present and correct. The plastic shell feels solid, the gimbal is neatly recessed for protection, and the top shell and battery door have very little flex. You do not get the foldable arms of a Mini series drone, but the overall footprint is still very manageable.

Camera and image quality

For such a small aircraft, image quality is impressive. The Neo uses a 1/2 inch sensor with a 12 megapixel camera capable of recording 4K video at up to 30 frames per second, with electronic stabilisation and a single axis mechanical gimbal for tilt.

In good light you get bright, punchy footage with smooth stabilisation that feels ideal for social media clips, vlogs and holiday highlights. Stills are crisp enough for phone and tablet viewing, and the wider field of view gives that classic drone perspective even at modest heights.

In lower light you will notice more noise and a softer look, which is expected given the sensor size, weight class and of course price! If night flying and serious low light work are priorities, a larger and more expensive drone in the Mini or Air range will be a better fit. For daytime and golden hour flights, the Neo’s camera is more than good enough for its target audience.

Flight performance and safety

Despite the compact frame, flight behaviour is very confidence inspiring. With a quoted flight time of up to around 18 minutes in ideal conditions, you can comfortably capture a few different locations or angles on a single battery.

Top speed is modest compared with larger drones, but that suits the Neo’s role: it is more about smooth, cinematic shots and playful flight paths than racing across the sky. Full coverage prop guards are a huge plus, reducing the risk of damage if you clip a branch or wall while flying in tight spaces.

There is no full obstacle avoidance system in the sense of multi directional sensors as with the Mini 4 Pro , so you still need to fly thoughtfully and of course by law you have to keep line of sight of a drone at all times anyway. However the guarded props and more limited speed modes make it a far more forgiving first drone than many powerful alternatives.

Smart features and control options

This is where the DJI Neo really leans into its “fun gadget” side. You can launch and land from your palm, trigger automated QuickShots, use subject tracking to keep yourself in frame, and even control basic functions with voice commands or the DJI Fly app on your phone.

For more traditional control, the Neo can pair with DJI remote controllers or FPV goggles, letting you fly via sticks or experience immersive first person view flights. If you already have DJI gear, the Neo slots neatly into that ecosystem as a lighter, more casual option for everyday use.

Everyday use and UK regulations

Because the Neo comes in well under 250g, it fits into the lightest weight category and is more flexible than heavier drones in terms of where you can fly. In the UK, recent rule changes mean that drones from 100g upwards with a camera require registration, and Remote ID requirements will gradually roll in over the coming years, but sub 250g models like the Neo are still the easiest way to get into aerial filming with fewer restrictions.

As always, you still need to fly responsibly: keep away from crowds, respect privacy, stay under the legal height limit and avoid restricted airspace. The Neo’s size and prop guards make it a friendly choice for parks, gardens and quieter open spaces when flown considerately.
